The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has approved a major budget allocation for the construction of underpasses on the long-delayed Northern Bypass in Peshawar, aiming to speed up the project’s completion during the current fiscal year.

The decision was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, attended by Adviser on Finance Muzzammil Aslam, Peshawar Commissioner Riaz Khan Mehsud, and officials from the Prime Minister Inspection Team and the National Highway Authority (NHA).

According to officials, the KP government will provide Rs200 million from its own resources for the construction of two underpasses, with each underpass estimated to cost Rs100 million. The funding is part of a broader effort to remove bottlenecks and ensure smooth traffic movement along the bypass.

In addition to the underpass funding, the provincial government has also agreed to arrange Rs4 billion in bridge financing to accelerate work on the 30-kilometre Northern Bypass, which is intended to complete Peshawar’s Ring Road. The project has remained incomplete for nearly 17 years due to limited federal funding.

Officials said the underpasses will play a critical role in managing traffic flow and improving safety at key intersections along the bypass. Once completed, the Northern Bypass is expected to significantly reduce congestion within Peshawar and improve regional connectivity.
